Q. What needs testing?

A. Any appliance which has got a plug on it.

Q. How often does it need testing?

A. That depends on the type of premises it is being used on and the type of electrical equipment. Some items require testing more than every 3 months, others items require no formal testing at all. I would recommend that domestic appliances are tested every few years, more frequently if they are in heavy use or are suspect in any way.

Q. How important is testing?

A. Over 90% of equipment faults are found by a good visual inspection of the equipment, its lead and the plug. BUT - this inspection should ideally be carried out by a competent and qualified person. The PAT tester gives advance warning of failing insulation, bad earth, incorrect polarity of extension leads, as well as a proper inspection of the plug to ensure it is safe to use and has the correct fuse. PAT testing is especially important if the appliance is second-hand. Please take a moment to have a look at some horrors I have found.
